NOVA: The Commute Sucks, But The Trails Are Sweet

A couple of us had Good Friday off and a couple of us took the day off and we headed north to Fountainhead Regional Park and Laurel Hill Park. On the way up, we questioned our decision as we sat in classic I-95 traffic. It was even worse coming home, but the time in between made for a Great Friday.

Fountainhead Regional Park sits along the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station, VA. According to the map, there are about 11 miles of trail, and for the most part it is smooth, flowy, bermy singletrack. However, there are some punchy climbs, some rooty sections, a few rocky tidbits here and there, and a couple of man-made jumps and skinnies.

I haven’t been on the bike a lot lately, and by the end of the full 11 mile loop my legs were hurting. It’s a great ride though with several vistas of the reservoir.

Laurel Hill is an interesting mix of oddly connected trails. Some of the trail is crushed stone singletrack through open meadows, while the Power Station Loop is more reminiscent of Fountainhead. The individual loops and sections are relatively short, but I imagine once you dial the place in you can make some decent loops and get some fun miles in.

I’d love to visit both of these parks again, but I am not sure I can stomach the drive. It’s definitely not going to be on my short list, but one day. One day.
